Home Sweet Home Board Book

This shabby chic creation will be a fun tribute to home. The base will be chipboard with fun additions of paint, paper, stamping, punching, and die cutting. We’ll use the Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers dies to make some structures for our books as well as some of the newer stamps from Paper Bag Studios which you’ll love. Stop by A Small Cleverness and purchase a couple of sheets of decorative paper you like and bring them to class to help build a theme and color scheme. Bring your workbox. You will definitely need a good supply of Crafters Pick Ultimate glue and a sanding tool. Be sure your Xacto has a sharp blade and that you have your cutting mat in your workbox. (All these are available at A Small Cleverness.) There will be an additional $8.00 fee for a kit if you want the project but cannot attend the class.

New Fat Book Swap

This brainstorming session will set parameters for the completion of a collaborative rubber-stamped fat book swap. Each participant will design a page and make as many duplicate pages as there are members in the group by the predetermined deadline.

Participation is a fun way to acquire and/or use papers, embellishments, and rubber stamps to create a unique book to enjoy for years to come.

Attendance at this meeting is not mandatory for participation. Call the shop to make a commitment or to offer suggestions if unable to attend.

Copic Marker Coloring

Copic markers are alcohol markers used by illustrators, designers, cartoonists, and more recently, paper crafters. They are smooth, vibrant, blendable, and designed to last many years. You will learn the basics of choosing colors and blending techniques. Beginners are encouraged to attend. Only three markers and the blender are required. If you have experience with Copic markers, you are invited to come and review your knowledge.

Mary Ellen has created 2 beautifully colored, layered, and embellished cheerful sunshine yellow floral cards you will love recreating. Bring workbox and Y11, Y15, Y17, and blender.

Artist Trading Card Swap

Make new friends and use up some of your stash of papers and embellishments by creating some artist trading cards. Start with a 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" piece of cardstock. Stamp it, paint it, emboss it, and/or glue patterned paper to it. Add a rubber stamped focal point. Embellish it and you are ready to trade. Need some inspiration? Come and peruse the shop collection of 2,500 artist trading cards.

If you are unable to attend, drop off your cards and we will trade for you. Or, mail them to the shop with sufficient additional postage to return your trades to you.

ATCs with Hero Arts Newsprint Stamps with Christy Hawkins

If you’ve admired (and/or purchased) the wonderful 6" x 6" plastic stencil templates from Crafter’s Workshop at the shop, come and put them to use in this class. Using watercolors, stamps, templates, ink, and pens, we’ll create some complex, color-layered pieces you can use as tip-ins for your scrapbook or art journal or put on the wall to inspire you.

Bring workbox, being sure you have a good, fresh glue stick and a watercolor brush in a size good for doing washes. Also, if you don’t like inky fingers, bring some latex gloves to wear during class. Optional to bring: a couple of small photos (laser printer generated) you might like to incorporate, templates from A Small Cleverness, a black Memento inkpad, your favorite colors of Distress Inkpads and/or re-inkers, and word or phrase stamps that “speak to you.” There will not be kits for this class since the essence of the class is the process of using stamps and templates. The instructor will provide direction, good quality paper, ink, use of stamps and templates, watercolors, pens, etc.

Classes and Workshops

Joni is coming back! If you did not take her classes last year, don’t miss out this time! She will be at A Small Cleverness from Tuesday, February 7th, through Sunday, February 12th, teaching 10 outstanding classes on card making, soldering, jewelry, home décor, unusual books, and more. Please pass the word to your creative friends. Class registration is now open. Please call with a charge card number to secure your place in classes.

A special free meet-and-greet event will be held on Tuesday, February 7th, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. You will be able to get to know Joni and ask questions before classes begin the next day. Also, her entire trunk show of rubber stamps, tools, embellishments, and much more will be available for purchase. You will be able to see all the new items and old favorites.

Another new bonus event is the Tuesday night make-and-take called Tags a la Carte when you can make decorated tags like Joni’s. You may purchase one of Joni’s vintage unadorned tags for $1.00. Then, follow the sample and incorporate colored pencils, glitter pens, Smooch, and more. Add trims and a special wire wrap for a nominal fee, if you wish. These tags make great presentation cards for jewelry and other items. They are also perfect for book tip-ins, collage elements, page accents, and gift tags. The fee is $1.00 per tag for as many as time allows.

Soldering 101

Learn to make soldered jewelry from the cutting of the glass to the finish polishing. There are many tips and techniques Joni has learned over the past 10 years that she will share with you to make soldering easier and to produce better results. Bring a Weller 100 Pro soldering iron and stand (available at A Small Cleverness). If you do not have this tool, register early to ensure that tools will be in stock at class time. Also needed are an extension cord (minimum 14 gauge), needle-nose pliers with teeth, workbox, and glue stick. All other supplies will be provided. You will leave with a wooden solder rail (an invaluable tool of Joni’s design – a $30 value).

Please keep safety in mind. Do not wear dangly sleeves, shorts, or jewelry. If you are sensitive to fumes, bring a painter’s dust mask.

In the hands-on part of the class, you will be able to make as many pendants/charms as time allows. All glass and prints will be provided, but if you have some of your own that you would like to use, it is best to print on ink jet if there is a lot of dark background.

Learn to prepare dominoes, how to stamp correctly, color, drill, and wire wrap. Find just the right images to take this project up a notch. Coloring techniques will show how to shade, blend, and set up a color palette that will make the finished piece really pop. Make 6 dominoes. Tell a story or share a memory with a story bottle. Adorn a pre-solder-trimmed vintage bottle with waxed lace, ribbon, vintage book shred, lavender seed, trims, wire, rusty screen, and images. You may choose to bring additional items to make your bottle more personal. For example, make a memory of grandma. Bring an image that can be suspended and any items of jewelry, fabric, watch parts, keys, hardware, small memorabilia, etc. You may also choose to solder-trim an additional bottle to take home. Learn copper etching and image transfer. Link 1" transformed copper square tiles and learn to embellish with charms and beads. Cold connection techniques of riveting, wire wrapping, and jump rings will be taught. Several different themes will be available. Luscious sari ribbons and artisan yarns are the materials that give this project a cool designer look. Learn to use a simple loom to incorporate techniques that will make your bag one of a kind. This “Beautiful Woman” book provides a tactile experience that will delight the senses as you explore its layers. Enjoy lovely images set in a warm white background, feel the coolness of the glass and the loft of the fabrics, and smell the aroma of lavender seeds as the pages are turned.

A 6" square glass bevel is the cover for this truly unique book celebrating women. The base material is painted canvas but materials ranging from chiffon, tulle, silk, and natural wool contrast against hammered steel and rust. Cardstock pages form pockets for tucking in faux vintage cabinet cards, letters, and photos. Transparencies and TAP transfer paper adds dimension to the pages. Easy-to-follow templates make the intricate binding fail proof. A center fabric insert will be collaged with monotone textiles that highlight the beauty of light and texture. Swarovski crystals and pearls are scattered throughout, adding to the visual appeal. A flag of fabric strips with transferred messages flow from the center page to draw interest to what lies inside. This tiny 1 1/4" x 2 1/2" mini book has a surprise cover that lets you see into the images that lie beneath. A window of Ice Resin slightly magnifies the images below. Pages are made from metal mesh, mica, distressed canvas, resin paper, and filmstrips. The kit comes packed with mini photos, paper trimmings, and embellishments for you to fill the pages. A variety of attachment techniques will be shown including eyelets, staples, sewing, and wire. Learn metal fabrication and texturing. Torching will be demonstrated. These 2 cards feature the dynamic 3-D surprise of rainbow honeycomb paper and a floating pop-up mechanism when the cards are opened. Elle stands on a ball and rides in a hot air balloon! Learn how to use a template to make a cloud background. Bring workbox, Gamsol, stumps, and Prismacolor pencils: 912 Apple Green, 913 Canary Yellow, 930 Magenta, 943 Burnt Ochre, 1041 Steel, and 1054 Warm Grey.

Classes and Workbox

Please refrain from wearing any kind of scents in the shop. It is objectionable to those with sensitive noses and/or health conditions. Please turn cell phones off during class. Cell phone conversations are not allowed. Please step outside to check messages or to make calls. Please arrive on time! Don’t forget your glasses.

Remember to bring your workbox to every class or club.

For your convenience, workbox items are available to purchase at A Small Cleverness. If you do not own class supplies or, if you forget to bring needed items, purchases may be made before or during a class. Bring personal trimmer, scissors, tape, tape runner, bone folder, foam tape, glue stick, and white craft glue (not Elmer’s). You may find the following items to be useful also: black marker, pencil, ruler, stylus, permanent black ink pad, 1/8" hole punch, dental floss threader, Xacto knife with new blade, small cutting mat, small watercolor paint brush, double-sided tape, disposable gloves, wet wipes, and Scor-Pal or Scor-Buddy.

Class Policy

Prepaid registration is required. Names cannot be placed on class lists until payment is received. No refunds can be issued for any class cancellations. A store credit will be issued for a class fee taught by a local instructor only if notification of cancellation is made 48 hours prior to class time. A class kit, as complete as possible, due to the nature of the class, will be given to students who cancel a class less than 48 hours prior to class time. For out-of-town instructors, cancellations received prior to 5 days will result in a store credit. Students who cancel a class less than 5 days prior to class time will receive a class kit, as complete as possible. For out-of-state instructors, the criterion is one week for a credit, less than one week for a kit. A Small Cleverness reserves the right to cancel any class (with full refund) for lack of minimum attendance. Class fees can be paid in person, with a charge card by phone, or with a check by mail. Please include class name and date.
